The All of Texas card features birds from all regions of the state, from the northern edges of the Panhandle to the Southern tip of the Rio Grande Valley, and from Big Bend to East Texas.
King Ranch is home to an incredible number of birds. 372 species of birds have been recorded on King Ranch, including the largest known population of ferruginous pygmy-owls in the United States. A variety of birding tours are offered between November and June each year, each tailored to offer the largest diversity of birds and target species.
King Ranch has a long history of wildlife management. As early as 1947, famed conservationist Aldo Leopold called King Ranch “one of the best jobs of wildlife restoration on the continent.” Today, the ranch is a vital part of an incredibly diverse landscape in South Texas dubbed “The Last Great Habitat.” For more information, click the Visit King Ranch Button below.
Birding with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension was launched in 2017 by spending 3 days with 16 birders on private ranches in Kinney County. From the beginning this program has worked to connect people to the land through the experience of birding, thus fostering an interest in conservation of natural resources. Not only do we look to educate participants, but the landowners as well. We show landowners how to implement simple bird management strategies on their property that complement their agricultural practices. Since our inception we deemed our flagship program, Birding the Border, and offer 6 trips daily with 2 specialized tracks. Birding with Extension now offers Rio Diablo youth birding camp, Learn to Bird, Virtual Birding Seminars, and weekly Cup Chat episodes. Our program has visited 17 counties and seen 113 species. This program is still in its infancy, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
